From a Kunming courtyard — the zafu that carries Yunnan earth

Sandry Law first encountered this cushion in a small family workshop tucked behind Kunming’s Green Lake. The proprietor, a third-generation artisan, had been supplying meditation halls and tea houses across Yunnan for decades, yet his goods rarely left the province. The buckwheat hulls come from high-altitude fields near Dali, where the cooler nights make for a firmer, cleaner husk. After harvest, the hulls are sun-dried, winnowed, and stored without fumigation — a process Sandry insisted on verifying during multiple visits. The linen cover is woven in Zhejiang from European flax, then naturally dyed to a warm oatmeal shade using tea stain and iron mordant. Each cushion is assembled by hand, the hulls tamped to just the right density: firm enough to support the spine during an hour-long gongfu ceremony, but forgiving enough to let the hips settle without strain. The removable cover, secured with a hidden zipper, makes care effortless. Sandry’s procurement contract ensures the workshop maintains its traditional pace — no rush orders, no price squeezing — preserving a craft that will likely outlast us.

The leaf, brewed

A seat that breathes — firm yet pliant, grain-scented simplicity.

dry leaf

Unpacking reveals a crisp, earthy scent of natural linen, with subtle grassy undertones from the organic buckwheat hulls.

wet leaf

After sitting, the cushion gently conforms, hulls rustling softly while maintaining firm support. The linen cover breathes naturally.

liquor

The cushion's silhouette remains plump and upright, its soft oatmeal hue harmonizing with wooden tea trays.

aroma

Hints of dried grains and flax resonate, free of any chemical finish.

taste

Seated pressure is evenly distributed, the buckwheat hulls shifting subtly to cradle sit bones — providing a grounded, alert posture through an entire gongfu session.

finish

Long-term use deepens the fabric's patina; the hulls can be topped off, ensuring decades of service.

Brewing

A method, not a recipe.
